Keep Kashmir connected

The fresh flood alarm sounded is Jammu and Kashmir has put a question mark over the claims of the government with regard to the steps taken in the past nearly eight years to prevent the flood like situation in the Union Territory. The water level has increased in almost all the rivulets as well as in river Jhelum, creating panic among the masses, who have already witnessed a deluge in the year 2014. In the aftermath of the floods, the government claimed to have started process to increase the capacity of water bodies to prevent the 2014 like situation, however, the flood alert that has been sounded many times since then is giving an indication that not much has been done in order to prevent the loss of lives as well as the damage to the properties. There are people who question the much-hyped dredging process that missed several deadlines so far. The dredging process was started with an aim to increase the capacity of water bodies here, but unfortunately, it seems that nothing has been done in this regard, which has resulted in increase in the water level once again that is flowing above the flood declaration mark at both Sangam as well as Rambagh stations. Such a situation calls for more measures towards preventing the flood like situation, therefore, the concerned department must take immediate measures to complete the necessary dredging process and increase the capacity of water bodies further. Besides, there is a need to strengthen the embankments of nallahs and other water bodies so that any breach will not take place and the people here could heave a sigh of relief.
