The deadly accidents in Jammu and Kashmir continue to claim precious lives here, causing pain and anguish to the whole society, but the decisions and steps are imperative at present to prevent the further loss of lives. However, one could easily imagine and gauge the seriousness of the administration in controlling the situation as the traffic norm violators continue to increase at a rapid pace while the authorities concerned seem more focused towards realizing the fine rather than coming up with a last-longing solution in preventing the loss of lives. It is unfortunate that the people, belonging to different civil societies and NGOs are watching as mute spectators. Instead of playing their key role, they seem reluctant to create awareness among the masses with regard to following the traffic rules in order to prevent the loss of lives. There is hardly any civil society or NGO that has organized events to create awareness among the general public about the necessity and need of following traffic rules, which points out their non-seriousness over the pivotal issue. Moreover, one fails to understand how long the people of Jammu and Kashmir would witness the fatal accidents like that of Poonch in which 12 persons lost their lives and more than two dozen suffered injuries Wednesday. The government needs to wake up from the slumber and reduce the graph of increasing fatal accidents and ensure that the traffic norm volition is declined to a large extent. It is the time when the government should think beyond announcing ex-gratia for the wellbeing of the general public.
