National Green Tribunal (NGT) for the first time has taken a stringent step to penalize the Jammu and Kashmir government for constantly polluting the Doodh Ganga which is a major source for drinking water in Srinagar uptown and some areas of Budgam district as well. However, there is no iota of doubt that the rivulets and other streams are being polluted, but it’s not the government only that is responsible for such a mess, the people too are involved in affecting the natural resources as they hardly bother to take measures to ensure the natural resources are preserved. Penalizing the government should serve as an example to the people at the helm of affairs as it should wake them up from the deep slumber so that the appropriate measures are taken to preserve the natural resources in order to ensure that the survival of humans is not affected. Natural resources are imperative for human survival and one should not be allowed to cause harm to these resources. Therefore, there is a dire need for the administration to make sure that these natural resources are not affected, thus the directions in this regard for stern action, vigil and measures are the need of the hour. Moreover, anyone found involved in the act should be dealt with as per the law and penalized so that the natural resources are preserved for the future generations. The issue of Doodh Ganga is grave in nature as the water body is a major source for drinking water for many, thus the government needs to take steps to clean it to prevent the water-borne diseases to the people.
