Srinagar, Oct 19: A Bomb Disposal Squad diffused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) weighing 20 kgs after it was detected by joint forces in between Langate – Wudipora of Handwara village of North Kashmir on Wednesday.
Officials said that a Joint team of Police along with Army’s 30 Rashtriya Rifles detected an IED on Baramulla – Handwara road.
Shortly after the detection of the IED, traffic was halted and the movement of people was restricted, they said.
A Bomb Disposal Squad rushed to spot and destroyed the IED without causing any harm.
Defence spokesman in Kashmir, a joint operation by Army and JK Police was launched based on spotting a suspicious object with wires astride NH-701 near Langate at about 05.45 AM.
“Search parties of the Army and JKP were immediately deployed and the area was cordoned by the security forces. Explosive Detection Canines of the Army were deployed, who positively confirmed the presence of explosives. An Indian Army Bomb Disposal squad was rushed in to the location to neutralise the IED. The bomb disposal squad destroyed the estimated 20 kg IED in situ without any collateral damage,” he said, adding that the Handwara-Baramulla highway is an important road for civil traffic as well as for the Army and CAPF convoys. Security forces with their swift operation have averted a major terror plot by timely neutralisation of the IED. “The traffic which was halted on the highway for initial hours, was resumed at about 10.00 AM, after the area was thoroughly sanitised,” the spokesman said.
