Uncle-nephew duo rescued from well in Kupwara

Locals hail district admin for rescue operation

Kupwara, Nov 19: Following a rescue operation that lasted for over 11 hours and involved at least 50 people, Firdous Ahmad Mir son of Nazir Ahmad Mir, a 10-year-old and his uncle from Kupwara district were rescued safely from the well last night.
An official said that a minor boy accidently fell into a well in Hatmulla village in Kupwara at around 4 PM on Friday. His uncle instantly jumped into the well to rescue him only to be trapped due to erosion of a portion of the well.
He said that the incident prompted the district administration to launch a rescue operation. “Police, SDRF and fire and emergency services department were engaged in the rescue operation till 2 am,” the official said.
He said that the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Doifode Sagar Dattatray was personally monitoring the rescue operation at the site of the incident.
But the rescue operation was quite hectic due to continuous erosion in some portions of the well.
But the official said that the duo was rescued safely after an 11-hour long operation following which the duo was shifted to hospital for medical check-up where the minor was discharged. But his uncle had suffered a fracture and was shifted to Bone and Joint hospital Srinagar for further consultation.
Locals praised immediate action of the administration in saving the lives of the duo.
