The loan culture in Kashmir: Balancing need and luxury

The Power Development Department (PDD) has augmented the infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir in a bid to provide better facilities and adequate electricity supply to the consumers, but one fails to understand why the old electric poles continue to remain erected, posing a serious risk to the lives of people in Srinagar City areas. In downtown areas, there is every possibility of electrocution as the Low Tension wires are almost touching the residential houses of the people, but unfortunately, nothing has been done in this regard for the last several years. Authorities have seemingly forgotten to repair the electricity poles and other things in the Valley, which seriously poses risk to the lives of common people. At several places, especially in downtown areas, the electricity poles could be seen in vertical directions with heavy load being put on it while the authorities concerned have so far acted as mute spectators with taking measures in this regard. Earlier, the department had directed its employees to conduct surveys to check whether the electric poles need to be removed or repaired, but it is unfortunate to see that nothing has changed at most areas of Srinagar as the poles have neither been removed nor repaired. To prevent any possible untoward incident, it is imperative to repair or remove the old and damaged electric poles in downtown areas of Srinagar and also shift the LT lines passing close to the residential houses so that the untoward incident could be prevented well on time and the people could heave a sigh of relief.
