The world famous Dal Lake, which has been a major attraction for the tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir, is certainly witnessing increasing pollution day-by-day as the authorities have failed to complete the much-needed and mandatory sewage system, for which the work has been started last year. It is being stated that the work on the much-needed project has been left incomplete as the concerned Delhi-based contractor has stopped the work two months back, delaying the completion of the project at earliest. It is pivotal to have the sewage system functional at the Dal Lake for houseboats as most of the sewage coming out the houseboats presently is getting dumped in the water body, polluting it further and thus playing a spoilsport in the efforts of the government to clean and preserve the lake. One cannot even imagine the clean Dal Lake without the sewage system, but there is a need to ensure the completion of the project at earliest. For nearly 800 houseboats in Dal Lake, there is no proper sewage system in place at present. The government is laying a sewerage network. Floating pipes have been laid from where all the waste would be collected at a chamber and later shifted to the closest treatment plant. This will help to clean the lake and nurture its aquatic life. Therefore, the government must direct the executing agency to speed up the work and ensure that the project is completed at an earliest so that the motive of the administration to clean the water body is achieved and also the lake is preserved for the future generation.
