Water scarcity in Ramadhan

With the onset of the holy month of Ramadhan, the reports continue to surface about the acute water scarcity in many areas, which puts the question mark over the government’s efforts with regard to providing adequate basic facilities to the people, especially in this holy month. As per the reports, the residents of Kangan Sub Division in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district are facing an acute shortage of drinking water for the last two days. Similarly, a Chattabugh village of Central Kashmir’s Budgam has also been facing an acute shortage of potable water, leading to the protest in the hamlet. The consumers blamed the concerned Jal Shakti department for forcing them to fetch water in carts from different places, even in this holy month of Ramadhan. One fails to understand why the reports about acute water scarcity surface in the holy month of Ramadhan, which puts the question mark over the functioning of the department and its efforts to ensure adequate water supply to the people. Despite directions from the top authorities to provide better facilities to the people in the holy month of Ramadhan, the acute water scarcity and erratic power supply during Iftari and Sehri time continue to irk the general public. The administration should intervene into the matter and ensure that there is no inconvenience to the general public in the ongoing holy month of Ramadhan. There is a need to ensure that the directions passed to the concerned departments are followed in letter and spirit so the consumers could heave a sigh of relief.
