Sopore, Jun 13: The students at the Government Higher Secondary School, Rampora in the Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have demanded science streams in the school.
A group of students said that there is only an Arts stream, while other streams, especially the Science, haven’t been introduced yet since the school was upgraded in 2019 to higher secondary level under the Samgra Shiksha.
They have sought immediate intervention of the Director School Education Kashmir in this regard.
“It was possible due to the efforts of the education department that this remote area is having a higher secondary school; however, there are still major issues like the unavailability of enough lecturers, and having only arts stream,” said Tariq Ahmed, a senior citizen of the village.
“The students who want to choose Medical or Commerce have to move to Sopore, which is 30 kilometres away from the village,” he said, adding, “Travelling to Sopore on a daily basis is a hectic process as the area lacks proper transportation facility.”
We have several times raised the issue with the authorities and also in the recently-held block divas programme chaired by Deputy Commissioner Baramulla but yet to no avail, Tariq added.
One of the students said she wants to pursue Medical as her career but the school does not teach the subject. “I want to study here but I may not be able to do so,” she said.
The students have appealed to the Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK) to introduce science, commerce and other streams in the school.
Chief Education Officer (CEO) Baramulla, Balbir Singh, said that the school was upgraded in 2019, and there are no creation posts other than the Arts stream. “As such the school has no sanctioned posts, so introducing other streams is not possible as of now,” he said.
