Kupwara, Jul 24: The flash floods triggered by incessant rains and cloudbursts have left the residents of Trumnad, Hyhama in this north Kashmir’s Kupwara district in a state of distress.
The locals said that the cloudbursts have damaged vehicles, roads, a school a masjid and several other structures.
Kupwara in recent days received heavy rains resulting in a flood-like situation at many places. The areas like Zirhama, Kalaroos and Hyhama were most affected.
The people at Trumnad said, “During pre-dawn prayers on Sunday, the water level started to increase and caused fear among us. Later, it started to overflow the danger mark and caused extensive damage to the area.”
They said the properties belonging to the local mosque and school were also washed away in the flash floods.
“Four vehicles were also damaged. The water level was so intense that even the massive rocks and other materials were flowing with it. The vehicles were submerged,” Marouf Qureshi, a local, said.
Another resident said agriculture fields have been washed away while the horticulture production has suffered severe damage. Some of the horticulture production was nearing the harvest, he said, adding that the floodwaters also uprooted many trees.
Firdous Ahmad Khan, a local, said that massive floods have left them “shell-shocked”. The people from many areas came to our rescue, he said.
The residents of Trumnad – a remote area – said that most of the people of the area are labourers and have no other source of income. They have urged the authorities to be “sympathetic” towards them.
“The LG Sahab should look at our situation and provide us with compensation,” they said. (KNO)
