The intermittent rainfall for the second straight day has once again exposed the tall claims of the administration about the drainage system in Srinagar as many of the roads continue to witness inundation whenever it rains, causing inconvenience to the pedestrians. The situation is being witnessed in many interiors of Old City while some of the roads also witnessed inundation today as the wet spell continued for nearly three days. The concerned Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has from time to time claimed that the drainage system has been upgraded but unfortunately the situation continues to remain same as the inundation of streets and lanes gave tough time to the people once again. A huge amount has been spent by the government so far on renovation and upgradation of drainage system, but it needs to be ascertained where the amount has gone. The government should initiate a probe in this regard and ascertain why the sufferings of people continue despite a huge investment in the recent past. It is the time when the government needs to make sure that there is no further sufferings to the people and all those involved in wasting the public exchequer by not taking concrete measures and steps are dealt with strictly as per the law. Amid the developmental boom in Jammu and Kashmir, there is a need to ensure that the old city residents also don’t face any hardships and they are provided with every basic facilities so that they could heave a sigh of relief. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure accountability and ascertain whether the funds have been utilized as per the requirement and why the people continue to suffer despite the huge investment.
