Power woes persist in Kulgam’s Chawalgam

3 damaged transformers await repairs, residents face hardships

Kulgam, Nov 14: For the past one week, the people of Chawalgam, area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district have been reeling under darkness as three transformers in the locality have got damaged, causing immense hardships to the inhabitants.
Locals said that they are reeling under darkness during these cold days as three transformers are damaged in Butpora, Khospora, and Hanad locality of Chawalgam while the concerned Power Development Department (PDD) is yet repair these transformers despite elapsing a week.
They said that the absence of electricity in winter season has left them to lurch at large. “We are reeling under darkness that too in harsh winters, which causes huge trouble for the local population, especially students. Even we need to travel to nearby villages to charge our mobile phones,” Gulzar Ahmad, a local said.
Locals appealed to the district administration as well as the officials in PDD department to look into the matter at an earliest.
Meanwhile, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), Power Development Department (PDD) Kulgam Division, Shabir Ahmad said that the transformers damage was attributed to overloading.
Ahmad urged people to avoid overloading and cautioned against using heaters and boilers predominantly in the morning and evening hours.
He assured that repairs to the transformers in affected areas would be completed within two days.
