World Breastfeeding Week celebrated at Govt Medical College Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 1: The Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College Srinagar hosted a poster competition amongst interns posted in GMC Srinagar on the theme “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all.” to observe the Day 01 of World Breastfeeding Week.
Twenty interns participated in the competition in which top three winners were Zakira Afzal, Azra Shakeel, and Suhaib Farooq.
Principal & Dean GMC Srinagar Prof(Dr)Iffat Hassan in presence of Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Administrator GMC Srinagar and associated hospitals, Prof.(Dr)S. Muhammad Salim Khan, Head of the Department Community Medicine GMC Srinagar, Dr. Tasneem Showkat, Medical superintendent SMHS Hospital appreciated the work of the participants and felicitated the winners and participants with mementos and certificates.
In this event, Dr Mariya Amin Qureshi, National trainer IYCF J&K, Dr Muzamil Hassan Lecturer SPM, resident medical officers and staff of urban primary health centre of SMHS Hospital were also present.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Shifana, senior resident community medicine and incharge UPHC SMHS Hospital Srinagar.
The activities related to World Breastfeeding Week shall be further carried out at various health centres in block Hazratbal, a field practice area of GMC Srinagar.
Prof (Dr) Iffat Hassan appreciated the department of community Medicine in organizing the event and called for mass awareness about breastfeeding. She also appreciated the skills of the interns who participated in the poster competition on highlighting the importance of breast feeding through art.
