The weddings in Kashmir are known for its charm and uniqueness, but the situation has reached to the extent where the people are making it difficult for the middle class and poor section of the society to live a dignified life with their lavish weddings. Although Wazwan and a few other rituals are norm in weddings across Kashmir, some of the well-off people have been extending the rituals, thus making it difficult for the people to live a dignified life as barely a few families can bear the cost of lavish marriages. Keeping in view some of these episodes, the people from different parts of Sopore have recently formed a committee to promote simple marriage within their locality in a bid to end the culture of lavish weddings, which simultaneously pushes the common masses to the wall. More than a dozen of localities have decided not to allow any lavish weddings in their localities to ensure the poor people are not pushed to the wall and help the downtrodden section of the society to make it easy for them to host the guests for the marriages of their beloved. Kashmiri weddings, known for their grandeur, often involve elaborate ceremonies, sumptuous feasts, and extravagant decorations. These celebrations are not merely personal events but are seen as significant social occasions that reflect one’s status and affluence. However, the increasing scale of these weddings, with their high expenses and ostentatious displays, has sparked a debate about the impact on both individual families and the broader community. The financial burden of hosting such lavish weddings is substantial while the environmental and social impact of these weddings cannot be ignored. At this juncture, it is essential to recognize that cultural traditions and personal celebrations do not have to be synonymous with extravagance. It is crucial to approach these celebrations with a sense of balance and responsibility.
