Jhelum is calling: What are we leaving behind for our future?

While the people hailing from different parts of the valley have been raising the demands of construction of the bridges in their localities, the fresh incidents of collapse is further increasing the number of the bridges, which plays a key role for the connectivity of the people and its absence is leaving them to lurch at large. A bridge in Dachnoo area of Heerpora in south Kashmir’s Shopian district collapsed in which two drivers escaped unhurt miraculously. The bridge that connects Dachnoo village of Heerpora with main Heerpora collapsed due to heavy load of dumpers that were carrying macdamisation material for Dachnoo road. The people have alleged the bridge wasn’t constructed properly and concerned department along with contractors are responsible for its collapse, adding that they will face hardships due to the absence of the bridge. With such an incident taking place, it becomes imperative for the government to probe the matter and ensure a stringent action against the erring if anyone is found guilty. A number of bridges are awaiting construction in the Valley, which has even led to the shocking incidents as well. However, the people have been raising their voices, seeking the immediate construction of the bridges, but amidst such an unfortunate occurrence, there is a need to ascertain the quality of the existing bridges as well. The government should constitute a committee to investigate the particular incident and also should ascertain the quality of the existing bridges so as to avoid any untoward incident.
