ECI lauds peaceful voting in JK

Srinagar, Sep 25: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has hailed the peaceful and high-spirited participation of voters during the second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections.
In a statement, Anuj Chandak, Joint Director of the Election Commission of India, expressed his admiration for the voters and the smooth conduct of the election process.
Chandak emphasized the significance of this electoral exercise, particularly in regions that have historically faced challenges in terms of voter turnout due to security concerns.
“Democracy is thriving in this once-troubled region,” he stated. He further lauded the enthusiasm of voters who came out in large numbers across six districts—Budgam, Ganderbal, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, and Srinagar.
The absence of violence and incidents marked a turning point, demonstrating the successful efforts by the Election Commission and security forces in ensuring a safe and secure environment for the democratic process.
A Shift in the Region’s Democratic Landscape
According to Chandak, the energy witnessed at polling stations highlights a growing confidence in the electoral process. “The energy and enthusiasm at polling stations today are nothing short of remarkable,” he remarked. The joint efforts of the Election Commission and local authorities to facilitate a transparent and inclusive election paid off, with the presence of webcasting at all polling stations enhancing transparency. This phase also saw Kashmiri migrants casting their votes at special polling stations set up in Jammu, Udhampur, and Delhi.
Inclusive Voting a Key Focus
The Election Commission’s efforts to make the voting experience inclusive were also highlighted. Polling stations across the region were equipped with Assured Minimum Facilities (AMF), such as ramps, wheelchairs, drinking water, and shelter. Additionally, polling stations staffed entirely by women and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) added to the election’s inclusivity.
Chandak also highlighted the successful introduction of home-voting for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, a feature introduced for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir’s assembly elections. This initiative, along with the extensive security measures and facilitation of voting in remote border areas near the Line of Control (LoC), underscored the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible voter had the opportunity to participate.
The next phase of voting is scheduled for October 1, 2024, while the final counting of votes will take place on October 8. (KNO)
