Ganderbal, Sep 26: Despite a ban imposed by the High Court, commercial buildings are being constructed illegally in Sonmarg and adjacent locations falling in the jurisdiction of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The inaction from the authorities has emboldened land grabbers, raising concerns among the public.
Reports said that illegal constructions are going on unabated in Rezan Zeri, Haihen Kangan.
Reports said a complete ban on construction activities up to 100 meters from the Nala Sindh has been openly flouted. Construction activities are taking place under the nose of the Revenue Department and Flood Control officials, who seem to be turning a blind eye.
The situation near Sindh Canal is equally alarming, with construction activities on the rise despite notices being issued. The beauty of the canal is being compromised, and waste from these buildings is flowing into the water, rendering it poisonous.
Locals have alleged that while ordinary citizens are denied permission to build residential houses near the Sindh Canal, influential individuals are allowed to construct commercial buildings.
Executive Engineer Nadeem Mattu attributed the lack of man power and claimed that notices are being issued to violators. However, he acknowledged difficulties in demolishing illegal constructions due to a lack of support from the Departments of Revenue and Irrigation and Flood Control.
Tehsildar Gund, Manzoor Ahmed refuted claims of non-cooperation, stating that his team collaborates with the Flood Control Department on demolition operations. He said a magistrate’s presence is required during such operations and assured readiness to assist whenever informed. [KNT]
