While the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has announced to come up with the new power curtailment schedule for winter, the people have been complaining of further power cuts against the existing schedule. The unscheduled power cuts amidst the promises of better electricity supply and also the low power generation is seemingly heading towards the sufferings of common masses, who expect a breather this winter given the promises done by the newly elected government. The power cuts are expected in winters, but the ruling government has the huge responsibility to ascertain how the huge funds have been utilized so far in the last five years and why has it failed to yield any results to the common consumers. Crores of rupees have been spent on augmenting the power infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, but one fails to understand why the projects that came during the period has failed to ensure a positive change on the ground as the people in urban areas have to face 6 hours and in rural areas 8 hours of power curtailment schedule. The eight-hour long power curtailment is tantamount to rubbing the slat on the wounds of consumers in the Valley. One cannot expect the consumers to reel under darkness for eight long hours in the modern era when every facility is at the doorsteps. The newly elected government, other than finding ways to make power availability in absence of the low power generation, should also come clear as to why Jammu and Kashmir is not able to increase electricity supply to the consumers during the winters.
