ITMS and shortage of parking spaces

In a step forward to put an end to the road traffic norm violations in Srinagar, the government has introduced Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) in Srinagar, which has been hailed as a progressive move. While the initiative promises to revolutionize traffic management and curb congestion, it comes with its own set of challenges that must not be overlooked. Among the most pressing issues are the chronic shortage of parking spaces and the daily sufferings faced by commuters, which seem to have been sidelined in the enthusiasm to implement the new system. Srinagar, like many other cities in India, has been grappling with an ever-increasing number of vehicles on the road. The population boom, growing tourism, and expanding economy have all contributed to an overload on the city’s infrastructure. In this context, the introduction of ITMS, which includes advanced traffic monitoring systems, smart signals, and automated enforcement mechanisms, offers an optimistic vision of smooth traffic flow and enhanced safety. However, these advancements cannot ignore the realities that commuters face daily. The lack of sufficient parking spaces in Srinagar is a critical issue. The city’s streets are lined with parked vehicles, making them narrow and congested, which not only hampers the smooth flow of traffic but also increases the chances of accidents. Amidst such challenges, the people at some places must not be forced to face actions on a temporary basis, to give them some respite when it comes to the parking vehicles so that they could heave a sigh of relief. Besides, the government should take measures to come up with an adequate number of parking slots so that the issue will be put to an end.
