As the world observed the International Day of the Girl Child—a day to recognize girls’ rights, raise awareness about the challenges they face and promote their empowerment. In Jammu and Kashmir, this day is a vital reminder that our girls still face barriers that hinder their growth and potential. Despite progress in recent years, many girls in J&K continue to struggle with limited access to quality education, early marriage, safety concerns and lack of basic facilities in schools. Dropout rates among adolescent girls remain high, especially in rural and remote areas. These issues are compounded by gender-based violence, which continues to be underreported and poorly addressed. Empowerment is not just about protecting girls from harm but about creating opportunities. Every girl deserves the right to education, health, safety and the freedom to make choices about her life. Government schemes must create an environment where girls are not just seen but heard, not just protected but empowered. We must also break the silence around abuse and discrimination. Stronger support systems, responsive institutions, and community involvement are essential. Awareness campaigns should reach the grassroots to challenge harmful norms and promote equality from the ground up. Investing in girls is investing in the future. An educated and empowered girl grows into a woman who contributes to her family, community and economy. As we celebrated the day, let the society pledge to go beyond symbolism. Let us act with policy, with empathy and with urgency to ensure that every girl in Jammu and Kashmir has the chance to learn, lead and live with dignity. The future of our society depends on it.
