As winter nears in the Kashmir Valley, so does the alarming annual rise in fire incidents, a tragic pattern that must no longer be ignored. The recent spate of fires reported across several districts is a grim reminder of the vulnerability of both lives and livelihoods in the region, particularly during the harsh winter months. Kashmir’s unique architectural landscape with densely built wooden houses, use of traditional heating devices like kangris, gas heaters and electric blankets significantly increases the risk of fire. Combined with narrow access roads, delayed emergency response and limited fire safety awareness, even a small spark can quickly turn into a devastating blaze. It is high time authorities act with urgency and foresight. Strict fire safety protocols must be enforced across residential, commercial, and public buildings. This includes mandatory installation of fire extinguishers, regular electrical inspections, clear emergency exits and community awareness campaigns on safe heating practices. Local authorities must also ensure fire brigades are well-equipped and their access to densely populated areas is unhindered. Building codes, often ignored, need stricter implementation and revision to include modern fire safety standards. Public cooperation is equally vital. Citizens must be educated about fire hazards, responsible use of heating devices, and the importance of not overloading electrical circuits. Schools, mosques, and community centers can play a key role in spreading awareness. Let this winter not be marked by flames and losses. With proactive governance, community participation, and strict enforcement of safety measures, Kashmir can break this dangerous cycle and ensure safer winters for all.
