The dearth of doctors as well as the paramedical staff is being seen as the most pressing challenges confronting healthcare delivery across Jammu and Kashmir. From the region’s remote primary health centres to District Hospitals, the vacant posts have overburdened staff, delayed treatment and compromised patient care, thereby; it becomes imperative at this juncture to address this gap by timely referring the vacant posts for recruitment. The functioning of the hospitals and other healthcare facilities get affected when the sanctioned posts remain vacant for a long time. These posts should have been filled with utmost urgency, but the delays occurring in referring vacancies to recruiting agencies demoralise the existing workforce, which is forced to operate under relentless pressure. In critical sectors, the dearth of the required staff can have serious, even life-threatening, consequences. Timely referral of vacancies would enable faster recruitment cycles, ensuring that trained professionals enter the system without unnecessary bureaucratic lag. This is particularly crucial for rural and far-flung areas of Jammu and Kashmir, where attracting and retaining medical personnel is already a challenge. Filling posts on time can help reduce disparities between urban and rural healthcare access. Moreover, a predictable and transparent recruitment process encourages young doctors and paramedics to plan their careers within the public health system. It also helps curb dependence on ad hoc arrangements and contractual appointments, which often lack continuity and accountability. The government has invested significantly in upgrading health infrastructure, medical colleges and district hospitals. However, infrastructure without adequate human resources remains underutilised. Buildings and equipment cannot replace skilled hands and experienced minds. Ensuring timely referral of vacant posts must therefore become a priority within the health administration. Streamlined coordination between health departments and recruiting agencies, regular audits of vacancies and accountability for delays are essential.
