Bandipora, Mar 17: Former Member of Legislative Council and senior Peoples Democratic Party leader Yasir Reshi has alleged irregularities in the leasing of around 150 kanals of Waqf land in Asham Sumbal area of Bandipora district, raising concerns over transparency and governance in the management of religious endowments.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Reshi said the land was allegedly leased out without any public notice, tendering process or disclosure of beneficiaries, calling it a serious matter that warrants investigation.
The issue assumes significance as Waqf properties are meant to serve public and social welfare purposes, and any alleged deviation from established procedures could have implications for community trust and institutional accountability.
Reshi termed the reported development a “serious violation” of transparency and legal norms, questioning the manner in which the decision was taken.
“These properties are meant for education, healthcare, religious activities and support to underprivileged sections. Leasing such valuable land through non-transparent means is against its foundational objectives,” he said.
He questioned the basis on which the land was leased and sought clarity on the identity of the beneficiaries.
“Why was the process kept away from public scrutiny and who has benefited from this decision?” he asked.
The PDP leader said that decisions taken without transparency could have broader consequences for local communities, including loss of potential economic benefits and disruption of development opportunities.
He also warned that such issues could lead to erosion of public trust in institutions responsible for managing community assets.
Reshi urged Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Chairperson Dr Darakhshan Andrabi to intervene and ensure a fair and impartial inquiry into the matter.
He called for fixing accountability and taking necessary steps to safeguard Waqf properties from alleged misuse.
In his remarks, Reshi also criticized the administration, alleging that issues of public concern were not being adequately addressed.
He described the situation as “deeply unfortunate” and called for immediate corrective measures.
Waqf properties, governed under specific legal provisions, are considered community assets meant for charitable and religious purposes. [KNT]
