The decision of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to provide Ring Road connectivity to the Gulmarg National Highway on the Narbal side marks an important infrastructural milestone for Kashmir. For years, residents of Gulmarg and Beerwah constituencies had demanded better road access to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time and improve connectivity with Srinagar and other parts of the Valley. The move finally addresses a genuine public concern that carried both economic and social significance. Gulmarg remains one of Jammu and Kashmir’s premier tourist destinations, attracting visitors throughout the year. However, frequent traffic bottlenecks and inadequate alternate routes often created inconvenience for tourists and locals alike. The new connectivity is expected to streamline movement towards Gulmarg while simultaneously reducing pressure on existing roads. More importantly, it has the potential to open fresh avenues for trade, tourism and local businesses in adjoining areas. For the people of Beerwah and nearby villages, improved road infrastructure is not merely about convenience. It directly impacts access to healthcare, education, markets and employment opportunities. Better roads strengthen rural connectivity and integrate peripheral areas into broader economic activity. Infrastructure, when planned strategically, becomes a catalyst for balanced regional development. At the same time, authorities must ensure that the project is completed efficiently and without unnecessary delays. Land compensation issues, environmental concerns and public inconvenience during construction require transparent handling. Proper maintenance after completion will also determine the long-term success of the project.
