The Gulmarg Gondola malfunction of May 25 should serve as a reminder that public safety cannot be compromised in the operation of critical tourism infrastructure. While the successful rescue of 320 stranded tourists prevented a tragedy, the incident has raised legitimate questions about maintenance, oversight and preparedness. The government’s decision to order a detailed inquiry is therefore timely. The committee has been entrusted with examining technical systems, operational procedures, maintenance records and emergency response measures. Such a comprehensive review is essential because infrastructure failures rarely result from a single factor. Often, they expose deeper issues involving compliance, supervision or system management. Tourism is one of Jammu and Kashmir’s key economic drivers, and the Gulmarg Gondola remains among its most recognized attractions. Visitors board such facilities with the expectation that every safety mechanism has been tested, inspected and maintained to the highest standards. Preserving that confidence is crucial. The inquiry must therefore go beyond identifying what happened on a particular day. It should assess whether existing inspection mechanisms are adequate, whether personnel receive sufficient training and whether emergency response systems can effectively handle future contingencies. Accountability, where warranted, is important, but prevention is even more important. The suspension of services since the incident also underlines the significance of restoring public confidence through transparency. Clear communication regarding corrective measures and safety certification will be vital before operations resume. Ultimately, the value of the inquiry will depend on what follows. Recommendations must not remain confined to official files. They should lead to stronger safety audits, improved maintenance practices and institutional reforms that place passenger safety above all else. The lesson from Gulmarg is simple i.e. infrastructure reliability is not an option but a responsibility.
