Dal Lake chokes under weeds, plastic waste

Srinagar, Aug 3: Srinagar’s Dal Lake is increasingly showing signs of ecological distress, with large stretches of the historic water body now engulfed by dense weeds and littered with plastic waste, raising serious concerns over its long-term survival despite sustained conservation efforts.
A visit to several parts of the lake reveals floating plastic bottles, cold drink cans, liquor bottles, snack wrappers, discarded packaging and other solid waste scattered across the water, giving the impression of a dumping site rather than one of the Valley’s most treasured natural landmarks. The deteriorating condition of the lake reflects persistent shortcomings in waste management and routine maintenance.
The lake’s water, once known for its clarity, has turned green and orange in many areas due to the unchecked spread of aquatic weeds and algal growth. Thick vegetation now covers extensive portions of the lake, restricting water movement, affecting navigation and diminishing its ecological and aesthetic value.
Despite the deployment of expensive mechanical weed harvesters and repeated deweeding drives over the years, large sections of the lake continue to remain heavily infested. Locals question the effectiveness of the ongoing conservation measures, saying the problem has persisted despite substantial expenditure on restoration programmes.
Environmentalists warn that the unchecked accumulation of weeds, coupled with plastic pollution and indiscriminate dumping of waste, is accelerating the degradation of the lake’s fragile ecosystem. They stress that unless immediate and sustained corrective measures are taken, the ecological health of the water body could suffer irreversible damage.
Questions are also being raised over the functioning of the Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA), with many concerned citizens alleging that maintenance efforts have failed to keep pace with the growing environmental challenges confronting the lake.
One of the Environmentalists while talking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust called for scientific weed management, stricter enforcement against littering, improved solid waste collection, continuous monitoring of water quality and greater public participation in conservation initiatives to restore the health of the centuries-old lake.
For generations, Dal Lake has been the cultural, ecological and tourism lifeline of Kashmir. Today, however, mounting pollution, unchecked weed growth and inadequate maintenance are threatening the future of one of the region’s most recognized natural assets. [KNT]
