Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

The actions against the traffic norm violations for the last over two months in Srinagar have yielded positive results on the ground as road accidents across the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and in its adjacent areas have declined to a large extent. Following the tragic Tengapora accident, which claimed the lives of two students, Srinagar city has witnessed a significant decrease in road accidents. The tragedy, which sent shockwaves through the community, prompted immediate action by local authorities and the traffic police. In response to the incident, the traffic police enforced a strict ban on underage driving, a move widely praised by residents. The authorities also conducted awareness campaigns, urging parents to discourage their minor children from driving. Many parents, reflecting on the Tengapora tragedy, have embraced these measures, emphasizing the importance of road safety. Despite the encouraging developments, concerns linger in some interior areas of the city, where minors are still occasionally seen driving two-wheelers, particularly Scooties, which calls for an enhanced vigilance in these areas to ensure consistent enforcement of the rules. As the actions have reduced the number of traffic norm violations, the concerned authorities should take immediate and necessary measures now to bring respite from the roadside occupation in Srinagar and other areas. The roadsides being occupied by the shopkeepers and street vendors need to be looked into on priority basis, which would help in further streamlining the vehicular movement and the commuters would heave as sigh of relief.
