Anantnag, Aug 26: Majority of people living in different parts of South Kashmir especially in Anantnag meet their water necessity from springs, but these natural resources are shrinking day by day, causing a wave of concern for the public.
Hundreds of natural springs in Anantnag district of South Kashmir not only add to the beauty of the place, but people in many areas get their water from the springs for their daily needs.
Famous spring “Dathi Nag” in Shangus area of Anantnag district, once known for pure and clean water, is on the verge of extinction.
Locals said that people living in different areas of Shangus and Chittergul were using its water for decades for drinking purposes but now the condition of the spring is very bad and nobody even dares to look at it.
“Since this spring has become contaminated we are facing severe drinking water problems, even our fields are getting adversely affected,” they said.
Locals claimed that the construction and repair work of the spring was started by the administration a few years ago but it was left unfinished due to unknown reasons which has brought the spring to the brink of destruction.
They said that regarding the walling and cleanliness, people have repeatedly drawn the attention of the administration, including the water department, but according to them, the administration is not taking it seriously.
“We appeal to the administration to look into the matter at an earliest so that this water body can be saved from further damage,” locals said.
