Heat wave preparedness in Srinagar: DDMA initiates training programs

Srinagar, Jun 8: As a part of the heat wave action plan for Srinagar, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Srinagar has proposed to conduct two training programs for students, teachers, local residents and community leaders in the second and third week of the ongoing month.
According to the heat wave action plan prepared by the district disaster management authority (DDMA) Srinagar, under the chairmanship of Dr. Bilal Mohi-Din Bhat, who is also the Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, outlines a multi-pronged approach to combat the challenges posed by rising temperatures, with India Meteorological Department (IMD), entrusted with issuing heat wave alerts and weather forecasts, coordination between various departments to ensure timely dissemination of critical information.
The first part of training is slated to tentatively start in the second week of June this month for teachers and students. The event is scheduled to be held at colleges and schools for ‘Awareness about Heat Wave Risks & Prevention for Students’, involving the Medical team, SDRF, Civil Defence and NGOs.
Similarly, another round of training–‘Awareness about Heat Wave Risks & Prevention for Locals’ is slated to tentatively start from the third week of June which will involve local residents and community leaders with venues at schools and colleges.
According to the heat wave action plan, DDMA Srinagar has proposed a couple of training sessions to make awareness about Heat Wave Risks & Prevention for students.
“The first program aims to educate students and teachers about the risks associated with heat waves and the preventive measures to mitigate them,” states the DDMA heat wave action plan document.
The document states that the Consultant (DDMA) will be the nodal officer for these training’s under the supervision of DDMO.
The action plans call upon SDRF, Civil Defence and health departments to cooperate in coordinating and executing these training sessions effectively.
“The second program targets local residents and community leaders, intending to raise awareness about heat wave risks and promote proactive measures within the community,” reads the heat wave action plan document.
The document further states that through these training initiatives, DDMA endeavors to enhance preparedness and resilience against heat wave events in Srinagar district.
According to the heat wave action plan, ‘red alert’ (severe condition) will be triggered when the maximum temperature exceeds the normal temperature by at least 6 degrees Celsius.
An ‘orange alert’ (Moderate Condition) will be issued if the maximum temperature is four to five degrees Celsius above normal, while a ‘yellow alert’ (Heat-Wave Warning) will be given for a departure from nearby normal temperature.
