Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital, Srinagar is one among the places where the cases of suicide attempts have been reported in the recent years. Many among those have been ending their lives by jumping into river Jhelum from some identified spots or bridges in Srinagar. The tragic loss of lives has prompted urgent calls for action, leading authorities to consider practical measures such as fencing these bridges to prevent further incidents. Fencing bridges is a widely recognized method to deter suicide attempts, as studies have shown that such barriers significantly reduce access to potential jumping points, thereby lowering overall suicide rates. Although fencing alone cannot address the root causes of suicide, but the comprehensive mental health support, community outreach programs, and socio-economic reforms are essential components of any long-term solution. However, the decision to fence bridges should not be seen as a hasty or arbitrary response but rather as a responsible step towards safeguarding the lives. By making these structures safer, we acknowledge the urgency of the situation and demonstrate the commitment to protecting every member of our community. While fencing bridges is not a panacea for the complex issue of suicide, it is a practical step towards immediate harm reduction. It signals a commitment to the well-being of our citizens and reinforces the message that every life matters. As a society, we cannot afford to ignore the urgency of this issue. Let us act decisively and with empathy, recognizing that our collective efforts can make a meaningful difference in saving lives.
