Srinagar, Nov 22: As the winter season descends upon Kashmir, the valley faces a host of challenges that have intensified the hardships of its residents.
The residents believe that while the cold is a defining feature of life in the valley, it is the accompanying issues — shortages of essential commodities, power outages, and the rise of black-market activities — that are making winters particularly difficult for the people.
“In recent years, the traditional charm of Kashmir’s winter has been overshadowed by the struggles of daily life. With the onset of the cold, the demand for heating supplies, warm clothing, and essential goods like fuel and food skyrockets. However, frequent supply shortages and rising prices, worsened by black marketeers, have added significant strain on families already struggling with limited resources,” Mohmmad Aslam, a senior resident here in old town Srinagar, said.
The challenges are further compounded by the management of basic services such as electricity and water.
“Power cuts, often prolonged, leave many residents without heat and light during the frigid months. In some areas, water supply is disrupted due to frozen pipes, making daily life even more difficult. The unpredictability of the weather, worsened by climate change, has made it even harder to prepare for the harsh conditions, and the administration’s efforts to address these issues remain a constant concern for the local population,” said another local resident.
Despite these growing difficulties, the people of Kashmir continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience.
Communities are coming together to share resources, help each other with heating solutions, and find innovative ways to cope with the challenges of winter.
However, many residents are calling on the administration to take more effective measures to ensure the smooth distribution of essential supplies, stabilize prices, and improve the management of services. Without stronger support from local authorities, Kashmiris fear that the winter months will only become more unbearable.
